First Lady Michelle Obama is My Homegirl

In light of the Melania Trump/Michelle Obama speech faux pas, I have to say First Lady Michelle Obama is truly an inspiration and it's no wonder why Melania Trump chose to draw from her speech. I mean seriously, our first lady is smart and beautiful and she's taken the role of a first lady to another level, a level that will be very hard to top. From the moment she stepped onto the scene, her presence has been felt. With her memorable Democratic Convention speech in 2008 to the many initiatives she has put in place today. Michelle Obama has without a doubt made her mark and will go down as one of the greatest first ladies in history.

When I was growing up, with the exception of a select few, I didn't hear too much about past first ladies.  Sure there was Nancy Reagan but she wasn't the one everyone talked about or admired. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is the first lady I grew up hearing about and she was long gone from the White House when I was a kid. She was best known for her classic style, beauty and grace. She is a fashion icon, one whom I just so happen to share a birthday with (July 28th). After Jackie O., there hadn't been another first lady to come along and impact a culture the way she did... that is until Michelle O. arrived!

Michelle Obama is the coolest woman walking the planet. She has made it her mission to help fight childhood obesity and educate the youth on the importance of healthy eating through her Let's Move! initiative, and she wants to assure that young girls and boys everywhere have a chance to receive a proper education past high school through her Reach Higher and Let Girls Learn initiatives, so that they too may someday become presidents and first ladies. Being a mom of two beautiful young ladies, Michelle Obama knows why fighting for those two causes are so important. Speaking of Sasha and Malia, can you imagine what it must be like for them growing up with the coolest mom ever? Not only is she the First Lady of the United States but she's fun too! She dances, she makes rap songs, she sings Beyoncé at karaoke, she has a SnapChat, and she's as down to earth as they come. Not only that but we can tell she doesn't play any games when it comes to the real deal situations, she's an old school mom too. Does it get any better than Michelle Obama?

She's a Princeton and a Harvard Law School graduate. In her own right she has become a fashion icon and someone who has truly identified with the culture. Transforming year after year as we all watched, Michelle Obama is every one's homegirl, and to Chicagoans she's even more special. I am proud to say I attended the same elementary school that Michelle Obama attended, Bryn Mawr Elementary, now known as Bouchet Elementary Math and Science Academy right here on the south side of Chicago in South Shore. Michelle Obama gives young girls and women everywhere hope and inspiration. Even the biggest of celebrities look up to and admire her. She has a solid and loving marriage, a beautiful family, a compassionate heart, and a will to make a difference in the lives of others. She gives WOMAN a good name, what an excellent role model.

I was inspired to write this post about Michelle Obama after watching her do Carpool Karaoke which you can view below... if you know me you know how much I love karaoke so I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. But as I watched, I was moved... simply because before Michelle Obama, I had not seen a woman of color hold such a position of power, yet still move just like me - a regular woman, comfortable in the skin I'm in, seizing the moment, and enjoying life and all that it brings. She reminds me of all of my amazing SisterFriends and the beautiful women in my family. She's like that favorite aunt you love to be around and look up to like an older sister.

So, here's to the flyest and most influential First Lady this country has ever seen, my homegirl, First Lady Michelle Obama!

Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude. ~ Michelle Obama

Although the circumstances of our lives may seem very disengaged, with me standing here as the First Lady of the United States of America and you just getting through school, I want you to know we have very much in common. For nothing in my life ever would have predicted that I would be standing here as the first African-American First Lady ~ Michelle Obama

One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals. And so when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don't invest any energy in them, because I know who I am. ~ Michelle Obama

Black History Month Celebrates Walter Payton!

Walter Jerry Payton was born on July 25, 1954. He was fondly known around the NFL and to fans as "Sweetness" because of his moves on the field and his kindness. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest running backs to ever play the game of football. The two-time MVP played with the Chicago Bears for thirteen years (1975-1982) and during his stellar career he scored 125 touchdowns (2nd most ever), 492 receptions, he accounted for a record 21,803 combined net yards and he was a consistent threat in the passing game. In thirteen years he only missed one game and that was during his rookie season in 1975. "Never Die Easy" was Walter Payton's motto. When he practiced on the field in college at Jackson State he purposely never ran out-of-bounds and always served his tacklers punishment whenever they tried to force him down or off the field. Payton attributed his motto to his college coach, Bob Hill. Never Die Easy is also the title of his posth
