One of the biggest celebration days of the year is finally here, New Year's Eve 2015!!
Many people are getting ready to party like it's 1999 and if you're like me you're thinking a little bubbly can't hurt right? Wrong! Many people who consume alcoholic beverages on New Year's Eve face that dreadful feeling after a night of heavy drinking... The Hangover. You know that moment when the room just won't stop spinning, your stomach feels queasy, that disturbing pounding headache that won't go away, and without warning the toilet suddenly becomes your new BFF. Oh, and let's not forget all the promises made to God about how you'll never drink again! Will this be you on New Year's Day??
There are rituals people practice like taking aspirin before drinking to help prevent the headache. Or eating first to coat your tummy... that's an oldie but goodie, or how about drinking just as many cups of water as you drink cocktails. Truth is, the only real way to prevent the hangover is... well... not drinking at all of course. If that idea doesn't work for you and the night just ain't right without a drink, or two, or three... just know there's a chance you may end up praying to the porcelain god.
So, if your preventative measures don't work for you this New Year's Eve, tomorrow try some of these foods ideas from around the world that are said to be the perfect cure for a hangover. In Mexico, Shrimp is said to be a great hangover cure, along with other shellfish. Their top suggestion is Vuelva a la vida which means return to life, it is a wet seafood salad (shellfish, tomato, lime, onion, cilantro).
Another big hangover cure comes from the U.S., the Egg and a Tomato. Some prefer their eggs sunnyside up or scrambled while others will take it raw! Over the years a good Bloody Mary has become a popular drink the morning after.
Many people often suggest just simply having another cocktail to get you "leveled," ya know the old "hair of the dog that bit you" trick... In the Netherlands, they just drink an iced cold Beer. If you're not into beer, try some Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey in warm water, that's how they do it in Iceland. You're probably thinking these food and drink options don't sound too bad, well how about this, Poland's top suggestion for curing the nagging hangover is Sour Pickle Juice, that's right all of you salt-n-vinegar fans can now have it straight with no chaser by sipping pickle juice! If that's not appealing enough, how about a bowl of Tripe Soup? Romanians swear by this greasy, salty soup made with boiled cow's stomach, root vegetables, cream and vinegar... sounds delish doesn't it? Eh, not so much.
If you just want to keep it simple and quick try Italy's top suggestion, Coffee, which also a favorite hangover cure here in the U.S. Ginger Tea is another simple option, it always helps with nausea and it has better properties than coffee does. A nice, healthy Banana will offer you potassium which is usually what gets wiped out of our bodies after all the drinking. Then there's Artichoke extract or adding artichoke to any food is said to help you to a speedy recovery! Artichokes helps the liver digest alcohol. A good Breakfast Sandwich can also do the trick. Why? Because it has everything you need wrapped up in one... Protein (bacon), Carbohydrates and Salt (toast), and Cysteine- a chemical that breaks down alcohol (eggs). Or you can always opt for mom's favorite the faithful, Chicken Noodle Soup, it will never let you down.
So, be sure to stop by the grocery section when buying your booze just in case New Year's Day you end up blaming it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
