Black History Month Celebrates Quvenzhane Wallis!

Talk about a girl on fire, Quvenzhane Wallis is making history with her stellar performance in the critically acclaimed film Beasts of the Southern Wild. Born August 28, 2003 in Humoa, Louisiana, Quvenzhane is now the youngest person ever to be nominated for lead actress at the Academy Awards. Nicknamed "Nazie," this pint-sized actress who's barely a Tween, has a ton of talent.

Quvenzhane was just 5 years old when she auditioned for her first acting job but she had to lie about her age. She said she was 6 years old because that is the minimum age required to be considered. Young Quvenzhane beat out 4,000 other hopeful young girls for the starring role of Hushpuppy in the film Beasts of the Southern Wild. It's been said that when Wallis auditioned, director Benh Zeitlin immediately knew he wanted her for the role and he adjusted the script to fit her strong-willed personality. In the film Quvenzhane plays a bold and fearless child prodigy and survivalist who lives with her dying father in the backwoods bayou squalor of Louisiana. Quvenzhane turned the big 6 while shooting the film.

In January 2012, Beasts of the Southern Wild premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and since then it has already received rave reviews and numerous accolades including Sundance's Grand Jury Prize. In May 2012 Wallis visited France for the film's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival where she received high praise for her performance. The film took home the festival's prestigious Camera' dOr award for Best Feature Film. Now age 9, Quvenzhane Wallis who's name (Zhane) means "fairy" in Swahili, will appear at the 2013 Oscars for her Best Actress nomination!

Since the breakout role in her very first film, Quvenzhane has received more offers to appear on the big screen. She has already signed up to star in Steve McQueen's upcoming film 12 Years a Slave alongside Brad Pitt. And this year she will also do a short film with Sundance called Boneshaker and is being considered for the lead role in the musical Annie.

I am very proud of this young lady, not only is she making history as the youngest person to be nominated for an Academy Award, she is also making Black History! The world will be watching as Quvenzhane Wallis listens for her name with hopes of walking away with Oscar gold to make history again. Congratulations Quvenzhane on your nomination and your bright future, Black History Month salutes you! Quvenzhane Wallis... Actress, Inspiration, Youngest in Charge. "Beast It!"

Black History Month Celebrates Walter Payton!

Walter Jerry Payton was born on July 25, 1954. He was fondly known around the NFL and to fans as "Sweetness" because of his moves on the field and his kindness. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest running backs to ever play the game of football. The two-time MVP played with the Chicago Bears for thirteen years (1975-1982) and during his stellar career he scored 125 touchdowns (2nd most ever), 492 receptions, he accounted for a record 21,803 combined net yards and he was a consistent threat in the passing game. In thirteen years he only missed one game and that was during his rookie season in 1975. "Never Die Easy" was Walter Payton's motto. Payton attributed his motto to his college coach, Bob Hill. Never Die Easy is also the title of his posth
